Final Year Project

The Amazing Sarong is an immersive storytelling experience that explores the vibrancy of kampung life and the artistry of batik. We were tasked to design a portable, eco-friendly set that facilitates cultural appreciation. It aims to spark children’s imaginations through a journey that culminates in a hands-on, batik-inspired creative session.

My first contribution is that I was in charge of the forest section of the set, where I had to build upon existing props from The Artground. I took the initiative to design and build a custom palm tree to make the environment more realistic. My main focus was making it practical; I engineered it to be easily taken apart and put together so it remained compact for storage and met our "travel-friendly" requirement.

While we each had our own sections to focus on, I made it a point to step in and help my teammates whenever they ran into trouble. Whether it was a technical build issue or just needing an extra pair of hands, I ensured I was available to support the team. This collaborative effort was key to making sure our different set pieces looked cohesive as a whole.

I also helped plan the overall layout to ensure the experience felt like a seamless journey. I focused on the "flow" of the room, making sure we used the space effectively without leaving any awkward gaps. My goal was to create an immersive environment that was exciting for the children to explore, while also keeping the floorplan open enough to ensure their safety during the play.

One of the most significant lessons I learned was the importance of persistence in the creative process. Building the palm tree for the forest section presented multiple technical setbacks, specifically in engineering a collapsible structure that was both sturdy and lightweight. I went through several rounds of research, prototyping, and mock-ups before achieving a functional design. This experience taught me that failure is a necessary part of innovation; by refusing to give up, I gained a much deeper understanding of structural design and the value of rigorous testing.

I successfully overcame the challenge of managing a long-term project by refining my time management skills. Over the course of several months, I learned how to break down a large, complex task into manageable phases—from initial ideation to the final build. By creating a personal timeline and sticking to it, I ensured that each stage of development received the attention it deserved. This disciplined approach reduced last-minute stress and allowed me to deliver a high-quality set piece on schedule.

I realized that strong peer support is the backbone of any successful production. There were moments when the team felt demotivated, especially when certain designs or ideas didn't work as planned. However, I learned that providing and receiving encouragement can completely shift the energy of a project. This experience showed me that a supportive group culture not only helps solve technical problems but also maintains the morale needed to see a project through to the end. It has made me a more empathetic and collaborative team member.
